We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to lead the development of a high-impact communications platform that powers AI-driven agent workflows. This is a hands-on role focused on building scalable, event-driven backend infrastructure integrating with Twilio, AI models, and real-time voice and messaging systems.

The ideal candidate has deep experience with Twilio APIs, strong backend expertise in TypeScript ) and/or Python, and thrives in high-performance, fast-moving environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement Twilio-based voice and messaging services (Voice, Conversations, Messaging, etc.)
  • Build custom call flows, routing engines, and agent-assist APIs
  • Develop and maintain scalable backend systems for softphones, AI agent routing, and context sharing
  • Integrate with third-party platforms like OpenAI, Deepgram, and Whisper for real-time transcription and streaming
  • Implement event-driven architecture using pub/sub systems (e.g., Kafka, EventBridge)
  • Ensure observability, reliability, and call quality for 100+ concurrent agents
  • Handle transcript history, PII compliance, and secure data storage
  • Collaborate closely with AI, product, and frontend teams on end-to-end agent workflows

Requirements

  • 8+ years of backend engineering experience
  • Strong experience with Twilio APIs and telephony/voice infrastructure
  • Proficient in TypeScript ) and/or Python
  • Experience with event-driven architectures and pub/sub systems
  • Familiar with real-time system observability, compliance, and performance optimization

Nice to have

  • Built softphones, worked with SIP/WebRTC
  • Experience integrating AI/LLMs into communications flows
  • Background in contact center, VoIP, or agentic platform development
