About The Role:

We're looking for a Tech Lead to join and help lead our Efficiency and Automation team at Paysend. This role blends hands-on software engineering with technical leadership to drive the delivery of scalable solutions that significantly improve operational efficiency across the organization.

As Tech Lead, you'll work alongside engineers, product managers, and operational stakeholders to identify opportunities for automation, reduce manual workloads, and streamline internal processes. You'll take a lead role in designing system architecture, guiding the team technically, and ensuring high engineering standards, while also contributing actively to the codebase.

This is a high-impact role where you'll shape technical direction, lead by example, and help the team scale its capabilities and influence across the company.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

• Lead the technical direction for the Efficiency and Automation team, ensuring architectural soundness, scalability, and maintainability.
• Design, build, and maintain robust backend services, tools, and internal platforms focused on automation, optimization, and operational efficiency.
• Collaborate with stakeholders across engineering, product, and operations to uncover inefficiencies and deliver impactful, automated solutions.
• Act as a hands-on contributor: writing code, reviewing pull requests, troubleshooting production issues, and driving system improvements.
• Mentor and support other engineers on the team through technical guidance, code reviews, and architectural decisions.
• Champion best practices in software engineering (testing, CI/CD, observability, clean code) and promote engineering excellence within the team.
• Identify and proactively address performance bottlenecks, tech debt, and operational risks.
• Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and collaboration.
• Work closely with engineering leadership to plan and deliver on the team's roadmap.

What You'll Need To Be Successful In This Role:

• 3+ years of backend software engineering experience, with recent experience in a technical leadership or senior-level mentoring role.
• Deep expertise in Java or .NET, with a proven track record of building scalable backend systems and APIs. Knowledge of Rust will be beneficial.
• Strong experience with PostgreSQL, and writing performant, maintainable SQL.
• A solid understanding of distributed systems, background processing, messaging queues, and event-driven architectures.
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS and GCP) and containerization tools such as Docker.
• Strong grasp of engineering practices including testing, CI/CD, monitoring, and infrastructure as code.
• A passion for automation, developer experience, and reducing operational overhead through well-designed systems.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and an ability to break down complex problems into simple, elegant solutions.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams.
• A proactive mindset and a sense of ownership over team goals, quality, and outcomes.
