Senior Database Administrator

About The Role:

As a Senior Database Reliability Engineer at Paysend, you will play a key role in ensuring the stability, performance, and security of our production database environments across multiple technologies. You'll be responsible for building resilient, high-availability systems and automating operational workflows to support the scalability of our global payment platform.

You will monitor and maintain critical databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, AWS RDS), implement robust observability practices, and lead disaster recovery and failover strategies. This role requires strong experience in automation (especially with Ansible), hands-on high-availability configuration using tools like Patroni, and deep technical knowledge of database internals, security controls, and performance tuning.

You'll collaborate closely with engineering teams to continuously improve our infrastructure, driving operational excellence while supporting millions of customers around the world. This is a high-impact position ideal for a senior database expert who thrives in a fast-paced, principle-driven fintech environment.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

• Oversee the monitoring, maintenance, and operational health of production database environments.
• Automate repetitive tasks using tools like Ansible, reducing operational toil and increasing efficiency.
• Design and maintain high availability architectures using technologies such as Patroni, and support robust failover and disaster recovery mechanisms.
• Implement and maintain observability practices, including metrics collection, logging, and alerting, to enable proactive system monitoring.
• Develop, validate, and maintain disaster recovery (DR) and failover strategies to ensure operational resilience.
• Administer security services for databases including encryption, key management, access controls, and sensitive data obfuscation.
• Coordinate patching, both scheduled and ad-hoc, to ensure database security and compliance.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to support the design, implementation, and optimization of database systems.

What You'll Need To Be Successful In This Role:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field.
• 7+ years of experience in a Database Reliability Engineering or DBA role.
• Strong understanding of database internals, performance tuning, and storage optimization.
• Proficiency in managing and administering Oracle 12c+, PostgreSQL 14+, MongoDB, and AWS RDS instances.
• Hands-on experience with high availability setups, including Patroni for PostgreSQL.
• Demonstrated ability to implement and manage automated database infrastructure using Ansible.
• Experience developing and testing disaster recovery and failover procedures in production environments.

Technical Skills: 

• In-depth knowledge of SQL and database performance optimization.
• Experience in managing secure database environments, including encryption, role-based access, and audit logging.
• Familiarity with observability stacks (e.g., Zabbix, Prometheus, Grafana) for database monitoring.
• Strong scripting and automation skills using Ansible, Bash, or Python
